The Manitoba Association of Home Economists (MAHE) is reaching out to families everywhere. Their new blog, Homefamily.net is a consumer focused blog written by Professional Home Economists to provide tips, techniques and information to consumers to help improve their quality of life.

Farm to School Manitoba

To all Partners, Advisors, Schools, Teachers, Parents, Family, Friends and Others with an interest in the Farm to School Healthy Choice Fundraiser,

My name is Lindsey Mazur, Executive Coordinator of the Farm to School Manitoba Healthy Choice Fundraiser (FSMHCF). For those of you who have not heard of the FSMHCF, it is an exciting, new fundraising program available to all schools in Manitoba, K-12, using Manitoba grown Vegetables. It will held from September to December 14, 2011. It is a partnership between the Manitoba Association of Home Economists, Peak of the Market and the Government of Manitoba.

With FSMHCF schools will have a fundraiser with great profits and the opportunity to:

• get fresh, local vegetables at or below supermarket prices
• offer healthy food choices & support school nutrition policies
• support local producers
• connect the fundraiser to classroom resources available at www.farmtoschoolmanitoba.ca
• try new recipes with Manitoba vegetables available at www.peakmarket.com/recipes

Meet the MAHE President

It has become apparent to me that I must do a plug for the Manitoba Association of Home Economists President, Getty Stewart.

I've had the privilege in working beside her on the Public Relations committee for MAHE.

She has been a key motivator behind programs like Fruit Share and Farm 2 School.  She most recently took part in a Flash Mob at East Kildonan Mall.



Her hard work was recognized as she received the Healthy Living Award from the Reh-Fit Centre.  You can read her reaction to receiving her award here on her blog.

Consumer Protection Enhanced By New Regulations For Mortgage Brokers

Manitobans who choose to use a mortgage broker will now have access to more information as the province enhances consumer protection for homebuyers through new regulations for mortgage brokers, Finance Minister Rosann Wowchuk announced today.

"Unlike other mortgage industry professionals, mortgage brokers were not subject to regulation.  Homebuyers trust mortgage brokers to give them sound and objective advice on what mortgage best suits their financial situation.  These rules strengthen accountability," said Wowchuk.

Basic skills for living is something that all of us need.  I have a friend and colleague, Carly Ducheminsky, who recently became a part of a organization that helps provide online resources for basic skills to live, particularly in healthy food choices and financial management.  Such skills influence our abilities to provide to our children and to ourselves.

Today, 21 March 2011, is World Home Economics Day!  Your friendly neighbourhood Professional Home Economists/Human Ecologists will be difficult to find as they will be celebrating!

For the Manitoba Association of Home Economists, we will be having a celebration at a local hotel, eating some great food, doing some networking, and learning from Social Media Strategists from CityTV's Breakfast TV.
